RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, INTELLIGENT SOFTWARE GROUP

    The Intelligent Software Group at SFU's School of Computing Science was
    recently formed with the creation of two industrial chairs funded by the
    Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to
    complement an existing endowment from British Columbia industries (raised
    by the Eppich brothers of Ebco, ltd.). The Senior Chair has been filled
    by Prof. Hassan Ait-Kaci. A concomitant Research Associate position to
    assist the Senior Chair is now open for staffing.


    In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be
    given to Canadan citizens and permanent residents of Canada. Simon

Job Description:


    The Research Associate will collaborate with the Senior Chair, designing
    intelligent software prototypes and developing applications. This will
    involve loosely managing the lab's software and hardware, as well as
    contributing to the design, implementation, and maintenance of software.
    One primary responsibility is to act as a liasion with the industrial
    partners to oversee the effective realization of joint projects using
    advanced software technology. He or she will report directly to the
    Senior Chair. Initiative and work independence are essential qualities
    for the job.


Desired background:


    Recent Ph.D., or M.Sc. with a few years of experience, in Computer
    Science or related field. Experience in industrial project development
    is a necessity. The required expertise is in symbolic and
    constraint-based programming and compiling, and advanced run-time
    environment development. Strengths and interests in data and knowledge
    base systems, real-time and concurrent programming, and graphical
    interface design are desirable. Proficiency in UNIX, C, C++, X Windows,
    Windows/NT, is required. Knowldege of Prolog and ML-type languages, and
    their implementations, is preferred.


    The lab is equipped with DEC Alpha workstations running OSF/1 and
    Windows/NT. Access to SUN SPARC-Stations, HP, and SGI workstations is
    available.


Starting date:


    As soon as a suitable candidate is found.


Tenure:


    5 years, possibly renewable for another 5 years.


Salary:


    CND $ 50K/yr + benefits.
