I recall that the authors of BMCC (Broker-Morris) discussed this issue
back in the early 1970s. Their conclusion was that one only needs a
compiler-compiler (BMCC of course :-). Their discussion appear in one
of the Elsevier (Macdonald) monographs. I wonder whether we have come
very far in the last 30 years.
