As a consumer of C compilers (although many have advertised themselves
as C/C++ compilers), I noticed that they got pretty good in the early
90's - until Java became big. My casual explanation for this is that
all the good people left to write Java compilers. Whosever law it is
about people being promoted to their own level of incompetence
asserted itself, as the second division employees got promoted to
being in charge of the C compilers, and the next release of many
compilers (and especially optimisers) got pretty flakey....
But then, I'm a natural cynic:-)
