Java has become the most exciting development in the later part of the
1990s. Launched as an alternative programming language to C++/C, Java
has now matured beyond a programming language, into Java as a system.
The reduced complexity offered to developers, support for object
orientation and a range of APIs, such as networking, security,
database integration, user interfaces and others, makes Java a good
candidate for developing applications in various domains, ranging from
E-Commerce, network management, scientific computing and education.


The objective of this conference is to bring together developers,
practitioners and researchers involved in Java based application
development, or in overcoming deficiencies in the language -- such as
execution performance, support for specialised data structures,
repeatability of numerical precision and support for real time and
embedded systems.




APPLICATION PAPERS - APPLIED JAVA

Papers are invited in the use of Java, including but not restricted to

- IN EDUCATION:
Experience reports from curriculum developers using Java as the
core programming langauge.Also, Java based applications that support
teaching and
learning, such as collaborative environments and multimedia courseware




-IN E-COMMERCE,FINANCE AND COMMERCIAL COMPUTING:
  such as large scale data mining, data warehousing, product
brokering and the use of Java in trading systems


- IN SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING:
applications in Engineering, PhysicalSciences, BioInformatics and
related areas


-IN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND APPLICATION INTEGRATION:
component models and application development environments


-FOR REAL TIME AND EMBEDDED SYSTEMS:
JVM support on various platforms


-JINI and INTELLIGENT NETWORK MANAGEMENT


-JAVA BASED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING:
CASE tools, development environments and code generators, support
for software testing and maintainability


- GRAPHICS: Java 3D and visualisation environments


- BIOTECHNOLOGY AND MEDICINE: monitoring and instrumentation

PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
=======================


Paper submissions will be refereed by the Programme Committee. Papers
can be of any length, up to a maximum of 20 pages. Accepted papers
will have 30 minutes to present the paper at the Conference.


Also accepted are industrial reports. This type of submission is
intended for proffessionals, who have little time to write a full
paper, but who nevertheless would like the oppourtunity to present the
benefits of their application at the Conference. Reports describing
your application should be no more than 6 pages long. Industrial
reports will receive a fast track review.


These are guidelines only, but please try to address as many of the
points below as possible.


Describe the Application
=================


* Describe the problem or business issue that is addressed
* State clearly what the system does, how it is designed and how
it
                  works
* What are the objectives?
* How large is the application (lines of code, number of person
years
                    etc)?


Methods and Approach Taken
====================


* Discuss the approach and the reasons for choosing it
* What innovative methods are used to solve the problems being
addressed?


Results
=====


* Describe your results in as much detail as possible, so that
other
                  developers could experiment
                  with the approach described.
* Are the methods used successful and did they measure up to the
                  stated objectives?
* Did the methods used provide any new insights?
* Provide a summary of feedback from users
* If the application is experimental, evidence should be provided,
                  preferably using a real-life problem
* How is the system currently maintained?
* Is there a Cost-Benefit analysis to back up the success of the
work?


You may also like to consider the following

* Is there a web site where readers can get more information?
* Is there a version that can be presented to an audience?
* Are there any related articles that have been published in
                  magazines/journals?
* What are the future plans for the work (extensions, deployment
                  opportunities)?


Papers and Industrial Reports will be published in the proceedings but
note that there will be a clear indication as to the type of
submission.


In some cases revisions to submissions will be asked for by the
programme committee. Authors are responsible for making the required
revisions and submitting the final or revised version of the paper by
the due date for the final version. Papers not meeting the revision
requirements will not be included in the Proceedings.


Papers from non English speakers are strongly encouraged, however we
would ask that your paper is proof read by a native English speaker,
if possible, before submission.

                Notification/Comments: January 10th 2000
                Final Papers due: February 21st, 2000


Five copies of your paper, in English, should be received by the
conference organisers, on or before December 6th, 1999 and for reports
by the 16th December 1999
