The "sandpile" quote is indeed in Kernighan and Plauger's
Elements of Programming Style (p 92 of the first edition),
where it is attributed to "a wise programmer." I'm thinking
Vic Vyssotsky or Dick Hamming, both capable of it and both
available during the writing.
