A book that I found readable and informative is "Programming Languages:
Design and Implementation" by Terrence W. Pratt. The edition I have (1975,
and I thought I was really a big spender when I paid C$23.75 for it) is
more elementary than what you want, but I felt greatly informed by the
author's explanation of the dimensions on which he compares his example
languages. There have been at least two later editions, and the later ones
may fit the bill. For clarity of exposition, Mr. (Dr.?, Prof.?) has my
recommendation.

Anyone who's read it care to review it? -John]
