Announcing a course on: Intensive C++
Sponsor: Western Institute of Computer Science at Stanford University
Date: July 27-31, 1998

Now entering its eighth year, this course takes an "immersion" approach
to learning the language. It combines extensive code examples,
explanations for language design decisions and lab exercises. It
concentrates on aspects of the language needed for practical
programming, and does not depend on any particular compiler, library,
or vendor.

Lectures begin with complete programming examples, and then explore
the language and library features that those examples use. Emphasis
is on detailed design and understanding how to use the language in
context, rather than merely cataloging features.

By the end of the class, students will be comfortable with most of the
C++ language and will be able to use it to handle real problems. They
will develop particular facility in using and understanding the
forthcoming standard C++ library.

Instructors: Andrew Koenig and Barbara Moo.

Andrew Koenig is a Principal Research Staff Member, AT&T Research
(formerly part of AT&T Bell Labs). His work has included programming
language design and implementation, security, automatic software
distribution, and on-line transaction processing. He is Project
Editor for the ISO C++ committee, and is the author of nearly 100
articles about C++ and the books, "C Traps and Pitfalls" and
"Ruminations on C++".

Barbara Moo heads the Technology Planning Division at AT&T. From
1986-1992, she managed AT&T's C++ compiler development. She is
co-author of the book, "Ruminations on C++".

For: Programmers, analysts, technical managers and teachers. This
course assumes general programming skill and a nodding acquaintance
with C++.
