I recently obtained _Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation_ by
Steven Muchnick and at least on first impression it's quite
nice. Chaper 3 covers symbol table design, and chapter 6 discusses
code-generator generation. Most of the book is centered on how to
structure a compiler to be able to efficiently implement optimizations
and on the optimization algorithms themselves. I'd say it's well worth
giving a look, in any case.
