From: ebr@doc.ic.ac.uk (Barry Richards)
Subject: jobs offered: in IC-Parc, Imperial College, London, UK
Date: 17 Nov 1997 14:12:48 -0000
Organization: IC-Parc, Imperial College, London. U.K.

                                                            IC-Parc,
                                                    Imperial College,
                                                University of London,
                                                                UK
                                                    17 November 1997

IC-Parc has new positions available in the area of constraint
programming and its application to large scale industrial problems. The
main focus is on resource management and planning. The industrial
sectors are transportation, construction, retailing, telecommunications
and oil.

There are two types of candidate who are of particular interest.

(1) The first will have experience in the development of compilers,
programming environments and libraries for high-level languages, such
as Prolog or, ideally, constraint programming. He or she will work in a
small team developing, migrating and maintaining the ECLiPSe constraint
programming system. ECLiPSe is a hybrid programming system supporting
constraint propagation, mixed integer programming and local search. The
candidate will develop novel functionality to support the combination
of such techniques as cleanly and naturally as possible. He or she will
be comfortable working according to good software engineering practice,
in coordination with the ECLiPSe senior architect.

(2) The second will have a solid background in one or more of the
paradigms covered by constraint programming, e.g. constraint logic
programming, stochastic algorithms, mathematical programming. They will
also have experience of solving large combinatorial optimisation
problems. The programming environment currently used in IC-Parc, both
for research and for applications development, is the ECLiPSe
platform.

Candidates will, in general, be expected to participate both in
developing applications software and in advancing the basic research
agenda. The balance will be determined according to individual
preferences and the needs of the Centre.

The appointments will be for 2 years in the first instance, and will be
renewable subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
Candidates will be expected to have a PhD or extensive industrial
experience. There will be an attractive financial renumeration,
including a salary in the range 20-30K pounds depending on experience.
In addition, there are opportunities for consulting for a spin-off
company associated with IC-Parc.

We are seeking to fill these positions as soon as possible and would
encourage interested candidates to send a curriculum vitae at your
earliest convenience.

Enquiries and applications should be directed to either
Professor Barry Richards <ebr@doc.ic.ac.uk> or Dr Mark Wallace
<mgw@doc.ic.ac.uk> at IC-Parc.

For further information about IC-Parc please consult the Centre's Web
page at http://www-icparc.doc.ic.ac.uk/
