These questions made me wonder. When did the first TOPLAS, POPL
confrences, proceedings appear?
The early ones (if they are as in depth as the new ones are, and I guess
they must be), should be good references.
One more suggestion: Find the original publications by language
inventors. It is a pleasure to see great minds at work. I second the
suggestion about Turing Lectures.
You may take a look at:
* the ALGOL report
* A Programing Language (by K. Iverson). This book is the description of APL
I am sure others have some other names close to their hearts....
