Years ago (~ 1979) I worked with the IBM optimizing compiler for
PL1. This compiler either called itself the PL(X) compiler or
called the language it compiled PL(X). There may have been extensions
to PL1 that this compiler supported that made the PL(X) language
slightly different that PL1.

[I believe that PLX also showed up at Dartmouth in the mid 70s and was
used as a system programming language on their 36 bit GE/Honeywell
systems. -John]
