Subject: job opportunities in partial evaluation at IRISA in France
Date: Tue, 01 Jul 1997 16:14:45 +0200
From: Renaud Marlet <Renaud.Marlet@irisa.fr>

We are looking for two software engineers for an 18 months contract.
Applicants should have a PhD in computer science. The positions are
not restricted by citizenship. They are starting October, 1st 1997.
Funding of positions is pending.

- Research Area:

The COMPOSE group at IRISA focuses on the development Adaptive
Software. Adaptive software is an approach aimed at reconciling
generality and performance. It is based on a program transformation
technique called Partial Evaluation which consists of specializing
programs with respect to invariants. Utilizing these invariants allows
a general system to be instantiated for a particular environment. The
instantiated system is optimized in the sense that all the operations
that depended on the invariants have been performed. We are working
on a system that performs specialization of imperative languages, at
compile time as well as run time. It is being applied to various
areas ranging from operating systems to graphics.

- Required Background:

The research work consists in developing partial evaluation
techniques for distributed, real-time systems, in particular for
telecommunication systems. Applicants should have a solid background
in programming languages, compilation and operating systems.

- Context:

The research work is to be done in the COMPOSE Group at IRISA
(Brittany, France). This group mainly consists of 1 faculty member, 1
research scientists, 2 software engineers, 2 post-doc and 6 PhD
students. More information about the place and the research topics of
the group can be obtained from http://www.irisa.fr/compose.

- Application:

To apply send a resume, the name of three references, and a statement
of purpose to compose-contact@irisa.fr. Applications should be
received before August 25th 1997. Positions are subject to final
authorization.
