Call For Papers

Workshop on Communication and Architectural Support for
                                            Network-based Parallel Computing

                                                                CANPC '97

to be held in conjunction with Third International Symposium on
                          High Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA-3)

The Menger Hotel, San Antonio, Texas, February 1-5, 1997

Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society

THEME:

Clusters of workstations connected by local area networks (LANs) are
gaining popularity as a platform for cost-effective parallel
processing, establishing the paradigm of network-based parallel
computing. Hardware and software LAN technology was not initially
developed for parallel processing, and thus the communication overhead
between workstations can be quite high. Efficient parallel execution
is often dependent on a high level of synchronization between tasks,
and there is typically little support for this in the complex
multitasking, multiuser workstation environment. These weaknesses
have forced severe constraints on maximizing parallel performance in
workstation clusters. Many research groups from academia, industry,
and research labs are currently engaged in deriving novel hardware and
software solutions to alleviate these bottlenecks.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and
practitioners working in this area to discuss state-of-the-art
solutions as well as future trends for providing efficient
communication and architectural support for network-based parallel
computing.

TOPICS OF INTEREST:

Topics of interest include, but not limited to: architectural and
operating system supports for achieving fast communication and
synchronization; network interface design; implementation of efficient
messaging layers; LAN interconnection with high-speed switches;
characterization of communication and synchronization traffic;
collective communication support; experience in implementing MPI and
HPF; data distribution and load balancing; supporting shared memory
paradigm; and performance evaluation and benchmarking. Results of
both theoretical and practical significance will be considered.

PROCEEDINGS:

The proceedings will be published as one issue of Springer-Verlag's
"Lecture Notes in Computer Science" (LNCS) series.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS:

We are planning a purely electronic submission and review process.
Authors are requested to submit extended abstracts not exceeding 10
postscript pages (single spacing), including abstract, five key words,
contact address, figures, and references. E-mail your manuscripts to:
canpc97@cis.ohio-state.edu. Note: the postscript file must be
viewable using the "ghostview" tool. It is also important, when
creating your postscript file, to use a page size of 8.5x11 inches
(LETTER sized output not A4), since an A4 sized page may be truncated
on a LETTER sized printer.

SCHEDULE:

Paper submission: October 7th
Notification of acceptance: November 27th
Camera-ready due: December 15th
