The best paper I have seen is:
"Self-compiling Compilers: An Appraisal of their Implementation and
Portability", by Olivier Lecarme and Marie-Claude Peyrolle-Thomas, in
Software: Practice and Experience 8, 149--170. 1978.


Also see the relevant portions of Ken Thompson's 1983 Turing Award lecture
"Reflections on Trusting Trust".
