It's not so baroque. DEC, for a time, sold machines with MIPS
processors inside. Along with the processors, they provided a lot of
MIPS software, including the compilers.
And for those who don't know, SGI has used MIPS processors (and
software) for years. More recently, SGI bought MIPS.
