I received two suggestions for citations, and several requests to pass along
the results. Thanks to those who responded. For those who yearn to ask
the same question, here's the answers I got:
Matthew S. Hecht, "Flow Analysis of Computer Programs",
Elsevier North-Holland, New York, 1977.
Steven Muchnick and Neil Jones, "Program Flow Analysis: Theory
and Practice", Prentice-Hall, 1981.
I've been told they're both out of print.
