I recommend R. Baecker and A. Marcus, "Human Factors and Typography for
More Readable Programs", ACM Press, 1990. An entire book on
prettyprinting C programs. The reasoning processes can be applied to
screen display, too. Don't be put off by the incredibly ugly results; the
book is worth reading. The authors themselves admit that tastes differ.
