Just to be clear, it was the intermediate language of Johnson's PCC,
which was first targeted at the Interdata, then the PDP-11 and Vax,
not Dennis Ritchie's original PDP-11 compiler.

[Good point. I wrote a competing F77 compiler INfort which did use the
Ritchie intermediate language. Someone else later modified it to use
pcc. -John]
