My main recommendation for you would be: don't write your compiler in
C. A compiler doesn't need low-level bit-twiddling thingies (it may
generate code that does it, but it won't do it itself), so it doesn't
need to be written in such a low-level language. You'll be better off
writing it in a higher-level language.
