A brief follow up, keeping focused on the economics of desktop
technology and the RPG applications domain. There is a product called
Visual RPG (from I think ASNA Inc.).
This mention is only meant as a lead for those who may wish to study
that product to see how the fixed column issue is handled by one
commercial entry.
I have not done much RPG since school but know that there is quite a
bit of RPG still around in intermediate sized accounting and
production support applications. I was in a shop where this recent
product created quite a stir.
The original poster might inquire into this product either as a model
of interfacing via GUI or as a solution to atleast partial migration
to the desktops.
