                        BROWN/MIT CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED RESEARCH IN
                                          VLSI AND PARALLEL SYSTEMS
                                                MARCH 25-27, 1992
                                                  Brown University
                                                    Providence, RI


The design of highly integrated or large-scale systems involves a set of
interrelated disciplines, including circuits and devices, design
automation, VLSI architecture, software systems, and theory. Successful
research in any of these disciplines increasingly relies on an
understanding of the other areas. This conference, the 14th in a series
that has been held at Caltech, MIT, UNC Chapel Hill, Stanford, and UC
Santa Cruz seeks to promote interaction among researchers in all
disciplines that relate to VLSI and parallel systems. The conference is
organized jointly by Brown University's Department of Computer Science and
MIT's VLSI and Parallel Systems research group.

In addition, 21 contributed papers on all aspects of VLSI and parallel
systems will be presented. The conference is small and informal. The
time allocated for each talk includes a period for questions. Open
discussion among speakers and attendees will be encouraged during breaks
and meals.


The conference banquet will feature Randy Bryant of Carnegie Mellon
University speaking on: ``Privileged but Illiterate: Report on a Year in
Japan''.


Proceedings:


The conference proceedings containing all the contributed papers will be
distributed at registration to all attendees. After the conference, the
proceedings will be available from the publisher:

Lunches:


Box lunches will be provided for the three days of the conference. If you
have special dietary needs, please indicate them on the preregistration
form.


Banquet:


The conference banquet will be held Thursday evening, March 26, at the
Biltmore Hotel. Please indicate your choice of entree either grilled
salmon with dill butter, or roast sliced tenderloin with sauce armagnac on
the preregistration form. If you have special dietary needs, please
indicate them on the preregistration form. Note: Student registration
does NOT include the banquet. Extra banquet tickets will be available at
the conference for a fee of $40.00 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Registration:


A registration table will be set up at the Biltmore Hotel on Tuesday
evening from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. You will also be able to register in
the lobby of Salomon Hall on Wednesday morning beginning at 8:00 am.
Access to Conference Site The conference sessions will be held in Salomon
Hall on the Brown University campus. Salomon Hall is a 15-minute walk
from the Omni Biltmore Hotel. Free shuttle buses will provide
transportation between Salomon Hall and the Biltmore at the start and end
of each day. Wednesday morning, the buses will start at 8:00 am and run
every 15 minutes.


Messages:


A telephone (for incoming messages only) will be available throughout the
conference. The number is (401) 863-1365. Terminal access to the
Internet for reading email will also be provided.


Business Meeting:


A meeting of attendees interested in the organization of future
conferences will be held Wednesday evening at the Biltmore Hotel. The
1993 conference will be held at the University of Washington, Seattle.


Transportation:


Providence is only 1 hour by car from Boston and 3 hours from New York
City. Providence contains a conveniently located Amtrak station serviced
by trains that run up and down the eastern corridor. T.F. Green State
Airport is 20 minutes from Providence and is served by many major
airlines, including American, Continental, Northwest, United, and U.S.
Air. All major rental car companies have offices at the airport, and taxi
and van services are available. Also, Boston's Logan Airport is an hour
from Providence by car.


There are two airport-to-hotel limos available from the airport- Airport
Limo and Beverly Hills Limo. They can be found right outside the
terminal, and cost about $5.75 one-way.


Parking:


Parking is available at the Omni Biltmore Hotel for $7.00 per day.
Salomon Hall, where the conference sessions will be held, is a 15-minute
walk from the hotel. Free shuttle buses will be provided between the
hotel and Salomon Hall at the start and end of each day. We encourage
attendees not staying overnight at the hotel to park at the hotel and take
advantage of the free shuttle buses. Wednesday morning, buses will depart
from the hotel every 15 minutes beginning at 8:00 am.

Attendees may either register at the conference or save $50 by using the
attached form to preregister by March 11. The registration fee includes
one copy of the conference proceedings, the conference banquet on Thursday
night, lunches on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and bus transportation
between the hotel and Salomon Hall. Student registration does not include
the banquet, but student attendees may purchase a ticket to the banquet
for $40.00, based on availability.
